The Devil's Star I'm adding Jo Nesbo to my list of thriller authors - right near the top. Harry Hole is an engaging character and a bit different than most detectives! This novel takes place in Oslo, Norway, in the heat of a Norwegian summer. Harry is an alcoholic, but a brilliant and savvy policeman when he's off the sauce. A serial killer is on the hunt, his trademark being a red diamond left on the corpse. Harry's case takes him into the world of theater as well as pairing him once again with an officer he doesn't trust ,Tom Waller. The diverse participants in the fast paced story are unusual, and paint a picture of life in up-to-date Oslo that keeps the reader guessing up to the very end. Nothing is what it seems and Harry sums things up this way; with a quote from Duke Ellington when he would ask the piano tuners not to tune the piano to perfect pitch, "he reasoned that if the piano's sound was perfect it doesn't sound good. There's nothing wrong , it just loses some of its warmth, , the feeling of genuineness" The Courier Killer gave us a perfect code that told us where and when , but not why and when Harry stopped following the killer's clues, he says his vision cleared and he began to see the truth. When the case was closed and the head of Kripos asked him how and when he finally began to suspect the right killer, that was Harry's answer, and I was impressed with an original answer of how to find truth. Jo Nesbo has a varied background which includes being a musician, songwriter, economist, and author. He lives in Oslo . His novels are bestsellers in Europe and he is often compared to Michael Connelly and Henning Mankell. Published: |
