The Monster In The Box
Ruth Rendell

Inspector Wexford is back, but we get  to compare Wexford as a young policeman to  the current Inspector Wexford as he looks back to a time when a man he has long suspected of murder reappears!

In the past , Wexford knew the man, Trego, was stalking him. Wexford never told  anyone of his suspicions when serial murders occurred because there was no proof and then Trego disappeared for many years. All these years later Wexford sees him back in town - Kingsmarkham.

Trego is an animal lover -  he likes them better them people! Trego started out as a poor kennel cleaner and van driver and has now become prosperous owning a large estate that includes his own zoo. Wexford is convinced this man is once  again stalking him , and finally begins telling his partner,Burdin, about his long standing suspicions.

As the plot progresses the reader is also treated to a picture of how the world has changed in the years that have elapsed, both in the world of computers, changes in housing and of how the many Pakistanis and other immigrants from Asia and beyond are being assimilated into England.

This is the 22nd book in the Inspector Wexford series, so for new readers of Ruth Rendell the look back to his early  days and up to now as Wexford is aging, is most interesting. This novel was first published in October 2009.
