Books: A Memoir
Larry McMurtry
The world of book lovers knows Larry McMurtry's novels very well. However, in this book we discover that his love of books takes many forms. His desire to read books as a boy was consuming, and the books were often hard to come by.
This memoir is a diary of his relentless desire to read and write, to visit used book stores and endless trips to meet and enjoy collectors of valuable books. In short, he becomes a connoisseur of the written word and eventually a talented book scout and collector of rare books. He was finally able to open his own book stores in various locations, all the while pursuing his career as an author.
This is also a lively collection of incidents, characters, and great stories about the people inhabiting the book world. It is a small volume, but one you will want to reread and enjoy again and again.
He now lives in his hometown of Archer City, Texas where he owns an enormous bookstore filled with 400,000 "used, rare, and collectable books".
Books was first published in 2008, but I discovered it in a good trade paper edition in 2009. The various categories of book collections hidden away seem to be endless, so being an excellent book scout has a lot in common with being both a snoop and a detective. Read and enjoy!
