Last Night In Twisted River
John Irving
John Irving's latest novel is long, complicated, compulsive and yet the reader must finish it. This author has a way with words that only a born storyteller can claim.
This book covers five decades, beginning in 1954. Twisted River is a logging settlement in northern New Hampshire and the main characters are in charge of the cookhouse. Surprisingly, these cooks are excellent and particular about their chosen profession. Dominic, the main cook, his son Danny, and Ketchum the logger, who becomes their great friend and protector are the main characters throughout these 50 years.
Because of a macabre accident, Dominic and his son Danny are forced to run for their lives from Coos County. They have a history in Boston, so that is the first stop; then on to southern Vermont and Toronto, Canada.
Dominic's life remains with restaurants as his livelihood, but Danny becomes a famous writer. My guess is that Danny personifies the author, John Irving.
Many characters go in and out of the lives of these three main characters during these 50 years. However, the evil constable from Twisted River never lets up on his hunt for Dominic and Danny.
There is a lot to love, hate and enjoy in this story, but there is humor as well. I have not read all of this authors works, but I did read A Widow For One Year, The Cider House Rules, The Hotel New Hampshire, and The World According to Garp. After that I gave Mr. Irving a rest! However, I am not sorry that I decided to give Last Night in Twisted River a chance, because this author is an original, and his voice does have something to say about the last half of the 20th century in these United States.
