The Chameleon's Shadow
By Minette Walters
This novel by Minette Walters just appeared in 2007 and follows her tradition of compelling, psychological thrillers.
Charles Acland received horrible head injuries on his tour of duty in Iraq as a British lieutenant. As he struggles to cope with his recovery he becomes aggressive and seemingly distrustful of women, refuses cometic surgery, and manifests total revulsion for his ex-fiance.
As the story unfolds, it is obvious that his brain is in very good working order - but his temper flares up when he becomes a suspect in recent London murders.
Chalky, a former vet now living off the streets appears and Jackson, a female doctor who owns a bar enters the picture. Acland becomes involved with these characters and eventually accepts help from Jackson; a surprising choice since she is a woman with strength of character and a no-nonsense attitude.
Acland had been an outgoing in charge type of guy before his injuries - is it possible for him to get over his newly acquired bad attitude, nasty migraines, an ex-fiance that can't be trusted and his fight to regain his strength despite all obstacles?
The suspense builds and the physiological challenges seem insurmountable. Acland must face some hard facts and make choices that will change his life forever. This is a timely thriller that faces the issues of today's world and doesn't let the reader go until the last page is turned!
