Playing for Pizza
By John Grisham
John Grisham needs no introduction to his vast army of readers, but this latest novel is so much fun I can't resist reviewing it!
First of all, if you're an NFL fan you will love it. Next if you happen to appreciate beautiful Italy, its delicious food and wine and its charismatic population you're in for a treat.
That said, you're about to be introduced to Rick Dockery, a third string quarterback for The Cleveland Browns. When he gets to play in a game against Denver with a 17 point lead and only minuets left in the game and gallantly leads his team to a miserable loss, his NFL career is over. Rick is actually a pretty good quarterback, with one terrible fault - he's become afraid of the blitzing linebackers and rushing tacklers and with good reason - he has suffered too many concussions .
The Parma Panthers in Italy are looking for a quarterback, and when Arnie, Rick's agent gives up on an NFL slot for his client and hears that Parma's Coach would love to have an NFL quarterback, any NFL quarterback, he convinces Rick to give it a try.
Rick has never been to Europe, doesn't speak a word of Italian, knows nothing about opera and can't imagine a football team playing for pizza. However his adventures from the day he arrives are wonderful; funny, heartwarming and totally entertaining.
This novel has appeared in the last months of 2007, and after reading it I brought five copies for fun gifts for football fans or anyone with a sense of humor. Enjoy!
