Dead Heat
By Dick Francis and Felix Francis
I was delighted to find Under Orders in the book store a year ago, and enjoyed it. Dick Francis is over 80, and had been very quiet for six years. So, it was fun to see another one, Dead Heat appear a year later.
Dead Heat is different - the setting is in the world of restaurants; the Hay Net to be exact. The Hay Net is in Newmarket and close to where the famed British 2,000 Guineas Stakes will run. Max Moreton, the owner and well known chef, has two important venues coming up. One is a private catered affair where almost all the guests contract food poisoning and his restaurant is closed for investigation. The next event is a luncheon for 40 people in the glass fronted boxes at the racetrack for the 2,000 Guineas Stakes. A bomb explodes and death and injuries are the result affecting patrons and even some of Max's staff!
As Max vows to discover what is behind these events, and try to save his reputation, he begins to suspect someone wants him dead as well - his car is tampered with and he is in a serious accident, and then his house burns down and he barely escapes. Are the personal attacks because of his meddling investigation or are other factors at work?
Dick Francis' son, Felix Francis is listed as a co-author of this novel. He has assisted with the research of some of his father's novels in the past, but this is the first time Felix is credited with helping to write the book. Perhaps that is why the restaurant world is featured, and the racing world of Dick Francis is the background this time around. Give it a try!
