A Spot of Bother
By Mark Haddon
The author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time , has turned a corner! He now has two wonderful books to his credit that are totally different in plot, but filled with a humanity that is at times laugh out loud funny and yet very serious.
The Hall family is in crisis - each member seems to have a life changing decision to make. Mr. Haddon has a way of writing about his characters that takes you right inside their heads, and makes the reader want to help!
George, the father, is newly retired and building a studio in his back yard. When he discovers bruises or rash on his skin he is convinced it is life threatening, to the point that he is quietly getting a bit balmy. His daughter is divorced, with a child, and planning to marry a man the family feels is unsuitable. His respectable, dependable wife might be having an affair, and his son seems to be in love with a man who has deserted him.
As the family seems to be heading toward disaster, individually and collectively, they still find themselves supporting each other even when it is not what they believe is right or in the best interests of anyone.
This is entertainment at its best, filled with humor and understanding. Mark Haddon has a way with words that is captivating! This novel was first published in 2006 , and has just appeared in August of 2007 in trade paper.
