The Maytrees
By Annie Dillard
A beautiful book is hard to find, but this is one of them. It is almost like a book length poem about nature intersecting life , if you look for it.
The Maytrees are a couple - Toby and Lou. They meet in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when Lou has just graduated from college and Toby , who is already 30 and a poet, fall in love at first sight. This might sound corny, but the delightful language saves the day. They lead a bohemian life in Cape Cod. Toby and his best friend Sooner move houses to make money to live on, but Toby saves mornings for writing - his favorite being book length poems. The Maytrees have a baby named Petie and that seems to complete the family circle, until Dearie , their close friend, changes things forever, or does she?
Annie Dillard writes of life, death, love and friendship with a sure pen and an understanding of the realty of true relationships that somehow lead to a kind of trust that is accepting, regardless of the circumstances. Make no mistake; this book is not pablum served up with a silver spoon. There is a great deal of humor, and the many characters that Dillard brings to life are funny, odd. weird and finally, genuine.
Ordinary things become fresh and new, and the commercial wants of most folks are cut down to size.
Annie Dillard is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is her first book in several years and once she won a Pulitzer. The Maytrees is a winner.
