Coal Black Horse
By Robert Olmstead

This is a book about war - in this case the Civil War. Robert Olmstead has written a heartbreaking novel that has been highly acclaimed.

The comparisons made to  Red Badge of Courage   and
The Naked and The Dead   are not misplaced. Once read, this is not a book the reader will forget.

A boy of fourteen, Robey Childs , is sent by his mother to find his father and bring him home. Robey's father is fighting in the Civil War, and Robey has no idea about the horror , lawlessness and carnage he will find on his journey. This is a coming of age story, but the process is not one would choose for a son. When
his horse falters, a kind older man gifts Robey with a magnificent black horse; one that is far wiser than Robey as they continue on their way.

Many of the characters Robey meets along the way are ruthless, selfish, and totally immoral, and things he must do to survive change him forever. This is a brutal, yet heart warming story. It is original, and written with an intensity and talent that makes you feel you are right there with Robey Childs.

Coal Black Horse  has first been published in 2007, and is on its way to becoming a classic.
