Simple Genius
By David Baldacci
Simple Genius , is David Baldacci's latest thriller - just out in 2007 . Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have returned in this novel; both are former FBI agents that are now private investigators.
This novel weaves several stories into one in a surprising and unexpected way.
The reader is introduced to two institutions in Virginia - a short drive from Washington DC. The York River separates the two heavily guarded places; one a laboratory where top scientists work on secret projects and the other an elite CIA training camp.
Sean King finds himself entangled in an investigation into the death of a scientist found inside the deadly fence of the CIA facility. His partner, Michelle, has psychological problems that lead her to provoke a fight in a bar that puts her in the hospital and eventually in a psychiatric institution for treatment.
Sean winds up living in Babbage town where the secretive laboratory is located in order to pursue his inquiries into the death of Monk Turing, the dead scientist.
We are introduced to Viggie, Monk's daughter who was living with her father in Babbage town, She is autistic, but also an amazing mathematical genius. Layer upon layer of information is uncovered involving the lab, as well as secret agents on the other side of the river, Michelle's therapist Horatio and a quagmire of lies, plots, and good works that would confuse the mind of the most sophisticated investigators, including Sean King.
Sean needs Michelle's help desperately, so when she leaves the psychiatric hospital and offers to help he is relieved - even though she is still under treatment with Horatio, who soon joins them in Babbage town.
I enjoyed Baldacci's last novel , The Collectors , and its cast of characters including the Camel Club enormously. The characters in Simple Genius are entirely different - I felt a different author had written the book. That said, this is surely another complex thriller taking place in the world of today.
