No Country for Old Men
By Cormac McCarthy

Cormac McCarthy is a writer that listens to the world around him, and trys to make sense out of what he sees and hears. This novel takes place in Texas, and the time is now.

Moss, a Vietnam vet and a man who is simply out hunting antelope near  the Rio Grande, stumbles across mayhem  in the desert - murdered men, heroin, and two million dollars there for the taking. He knows his world will change if he packs the money out, but he gambles that he can handle the consequences and the hunt is on.

Sheriff Bell enters the picture after more murders  bring him into the case, and he finally finds the carnage in the desert. Moss is on the run and sends his wife to her mother in Odessa for safety.  A Mr. Wells is hired by the drug merchants to get their money back, and as the violence escalates and the  reader meets a psychopath named Chigurh, evil takes center stage.

Sheriff Bell  is a good man trying to figure out when and how his world has changed. Values are different, and I quote : " how does a man decide in what order to abandon his life? "  He further ruminates that "you can't have a dope business without dopers... millions of them".

McCarthy's prose has a rhythm that takes you into the heads and minds of his characters. He wrestles with good and evil, life and death and reflects on the spiritual as well.

Mr. McCarthy is perhaps best known for his Border Trilogy, which included All The Pretty Horses and Cities of the Plain  .
No Country for Old Men has just appeared in book stores in July, 2005.  Don't miss this one!
